Information for The Online Work at Home Mum

What’s your top tip?

By Darina • May 19th, 2008 • Category: For WAHMs

Top Tip TuesdayI’ve got a few websites ! and I’ve promoted them in different ways, learning a lot as I go (still learning), what to do what not to do. Many work from home Mums or other online business owners often ask me what’s my top tip for online promotion?.

I’ve thought about this a lot and I could give answers like making sure you’ve got a well optimized site, or getting relevent one-way inbound links, or building up your mailing list.. etc..and obviously all of those are of course important, and I have given them as answers (usually a long list !) but when I was asked again recently I thought about it and and I have to say, I think my top tip for online promotion is:

1. Do a minimum of one thing every day to promote your site (preferably more, but at least 1)

Online marketing and promotion is not an overnight miracle ! It’s an ongoing process and should be treated as such, not just something that’s done when the site is new and you’re looking for your first visitors.

So what do I mean by doing at least one thing every day? ok I don’t mean tweaking your site, adding graphics, adding products etc.. (that should be done anyway) I’m talking about pro-active marketing of your website. It might seem overwhelming when you look at all that you should or could do, but if you do at least 1 thing every day it gets easier, and you’ll soon start to see the results.

Here are a few ideas

  • Write an article and submit it for publication to some of the online article directories (such as ladypens.com or ezinearticles.com)
  • Write a blog entry or comment on other relevent blog entries that you come across
  • Respond to a forum post making sure your website is in your signature line
  • Research and approach relevent link exchange partners (ideally not direct reciprocal but perhaps blog to site or site to blog etc..)
  • Write and enter a google adwords campaign
  • Send out a press release
  • Hold a competition on your site
  • Write 3 Newsletter articles ready for sending..

Those are only a few of the things you can do, and if you just pick one a day you’ll soon build up a complete online marketing and promotion plan with noticeable results !

Now I’m off to write a guest blog post !

    1. Join Social Networking websites like MY SPACE & BEBO. You will be amazed at how many people link up to you & your website!

    2. Darina,

It’s hard to find places to advertise your website when like me you are new to it all. I will try the above and try to write a few articles to submit.

      Many thanks

      Trish

    4. Hi Darina,

thanks for those useful tips. While I blog regularly, I have yet to submit articles or join Bebo etc. Having a competition on the website is a good idea too. I’m going to be selling online very soon and will follow your advice and launch it with a competition.

      Thanks, Lorna

    5. I am doing one your top tips now - responding to your forum!! Good info Darina, thanks for all that now are there any quicker more efficient and cost effective ways to achieve this aim, afterall the site could be marketed but will it do more than raise your profile and how does one get it to pay?? I ask this as my site is literally live by 1 week!!

    6. Thanks everyone for your comments. Frances there’s quite a bit to cover there LOL. First of all your first question (are there quick, more efficient and cost effective ways) well for cost effective you can’t get better than any of the ways mentioned above ! - most apart from adwords are free, even the competition you could get sponsors for the prizes. quicker ? - Yes of course if you have a mad advertising and promotion budget there is nothing to stop you from blasting it all over the papers etc.. ! otherwise you are stuck like the rest of us in trying to do a little bit pro-actively every day. more efficient? - well all of the ways above are efficient and DO work I can testify to that.. but as mentioned before it takes time !!

your next question - will it do more than raise your profile and how do you get it to pay?, well if you’ve designed the site properly, raising your profile and driving people to the site should be aim number 1 - what you do with them when they get there is aim number 2 (goes in tandem with aim nr 1 !) have a read of this for some ideas http://www.iamawahm.com/keep-them-coming-back.html

and finally how does one get it to pay? - ok that’s a whole different topic LOL….stop by the forum and we can discuss that further :)

    7. Great tips Darina!
‘Do a minimum of one thing every day to promote your site’- it’s so important. I’m not saying it’s easy but I’m trying to stick to it.
I came across people that think when you have an online business you just have to sit back and the visitors will come to your site.
It’s not that easy at all. We all know it.

    8. Hi Darina, I have visited your other websites (a few, and I am sure there are many more that you have created successfully) - and the whole concept is just amazing. Thank you very much for your advice and tips - and that you are sharing your “secrets” to success with us!

      Well done and thanks again.

    9. Hi All, … the ‘kiss’ will work wonders … i.e., ‘keep it so simple’. Business is about people not product/service and despite the ‘hi-tech hi-cheque’ syndrome it is in the end the people who create success. World wide, referral (or word of mouth) is the most successful way to grow. Be interested in people, their needs/wants, provide them with solutions, don’t sell! By caring and sharing a ‘people’ will become ‘a customer’ … not just a one off sale. Financial and time freedom will grow via customers/people … not hi-tech.

    10. Hi Darina,

All of your tips and suggestions are great, its like the old saying “mind the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves” - by doing a little every day it won’t be long before all the daily small items add up to become a major marketing advantage over the person who is not proactive in carrying out any marketing at all!

      Keep up the good work.
