or maybe not?

I’ve been thinking for a while about what topic to have in the next live chat session on iamawahm and one of the recurring questions and issues that comes up with new WAHMs and not so new WAHMS is “How can I create a website on my limited budget ?”

I also see a few of you who use free webhosting to create sites, and that can be ok to get started, but really if you want to build a business and have a professional image you need your own domain and a site you have complete control of to move, change, add to
etc..

Of course you can pay whatever you want for a website, from zero to tens of thousands and a lot of it comes down to what you need, what you want and what your budget is ! I’ve got a few websites as you may know and I’ve done it a few different ways, from doing it myself to having professional help and each has their merits depending on your situation. What I often do is a combination, get a designer for the graphics and then build the site myself. (by the way in case you are wondering who I use, I recommend Nola at www.classiccreationsdesign.com and if you are getting a few different graphics done throughout the year, she’s got a veryinnovative idea where you sign up for membership of a club fixed fee then get 50% discount on any graphics you need during the year,- I’ve joined and it’s great, so if you decide to use Nola I didn’t put my affiliate link there, just tell her who sent you ! ) Sorry
I went off on a tangent there !

Anyway as I was saying there are lots of different ways to build a website and one of my favourites at the moment and has been for a while is using wordpress, blogging platform to create a non-blog website. It’s cheap, easy and looks well, plus blogs are notoriously good on the old SEO

I think that many people don’t realise how quick it is and how effective it can be, so I decided that the next chat session would be a demo on using wordpress to build a product or service selling site, so in otherwords not just an information site, but show you how you can build a website where you can actually sell a product or service and collect the money for it.

It will be a 2 part chat/demo part 1, I will go through installing wordpress, picking and installing a theme, the relevent plugins for selling products and services, show you how they work, we will also talk about cost, hosting, domain names etc.. and then in part 2 we’ll go a bit deeper into customising the site and “prettying” it up.

Don’t be put off by a fear of technology on this one! If you can find your way around a website, or use microsoft word, or similar type products then you will be well able for this and you will have a professional looking, working website in no time at all.

So when? Next Tuesday the 10th of February at 11.00am (dublin time)

Where: In the iamawahm conference room go to http://www.iamawahm.com/chat.html for further details and to register. (space is limited so when you register make sure you turn up on time !)

What do I need?: Just bring yourself, a pen and paper in case you want to take notes, and you will also need speakers to hear me talk.

So I hope to see you there, and if it’s of no use to you then you might know someone who would benefit just pass on the info

Even if you can’t make next tuesday, I am going to try and record it (doesn’t always work !) so do register and you’ll hopefully still be able to get at least some of it.

talk to you soon

  1. Time management is a constant problem for me and as a result I missed the chat session, simply because I scanned the beginning of the above post and didn’t manage to get to the bottom of it! Okay, so it’s a shame but never mind!?

Actually this is a crucial lesson for me, as I’d been given the heads up by Darina a few days early, while she was planning the chat session. Ironically, I did look up the date of the chat session, ie on Tuesday and thought that I’d missed it! The write up states that it is the first Tuesday of each month…

Kicking myself for not having tuned in earlier I left disappointed with my lack of planning, etc. Imagine how annoyed I am with myself for not having pursued the matter and registering anyway, chancing my arm so to speak. All this took place at about 10.05am, just a few minutes into the session.

So let that be a lesson for us all, plan your time, use your calendar function on Outlook and don’t miss out on anything else! Fingers crossed that Darina managed to record the session…

  2. In response to Polly Pierce - know what you mean, I have now got my (not mentioning any names) generic phone with a name like a soft fruit :) to do the same thing (plus it sync’s between desktop and phone).

What is the next lesson going to be about? I don’t want to miss it.
